MANILA, Philippines – Fifteen people, including nine nursing school graduates who were hours away from taking the two-day licensure examinations, were confirmed killed when fire hit a budget hotel and a semi-commercial building in Tuguegarao City early Sunday morning, police said.
Senior Superintendent Mao Aplasca, Cagayan Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said the fire broke out at 1 a.m., initially trapping most of the victims in the two buildings at the corner of Luna and Mabini Streets in downtown Tuguegarao City.
The fire reportedly started at a residential-commercial building and then jumped to the five-story Bed and Breakfast Pension House where the nursing school graduates were staying in preparation for the state board exam which started Sunday.
Superintendent Pedro Martirez, chief of the Tuguegarao City Police, said the bodies of the nine male nursing school graduates from the University of La Sallete in Isabela City were retrieved along with six others.
The charred remains of a couple who owned one of the destroyed buildings and their two grandchildren were also among the fatalities.
Martirez identified six of the fatalities as Norman Fondevilla, Anniedel Fondevilla, Mildred de Leon, Karylle de Leon, Josh de Leon, and a certain Jen, reportedly the househelp.
“All the victims were trapped in the two buildings. They were burned beyond recognition. Most of the victims were already identified through their relatives and companions,” said Martirez.
Martinez said 14 other people were injured in the fire that struck while occupants of the buildings were sleeping.
“We have already stopped the search and retrieval operations. All cadavers were already accounted for,” said Martirez in a phone interview past 2 p.m. Sunday.
In the case of the nursing school graduates, Martirez said they were being identified by the teacher-in-charge of their school and some of their classmates who survived the incident.
Aplasca said arson investigators were still determining the cause of the blaze and from what area of the building it started as of press time.
“The fire was declared under control at five in the morning, all the firemen in Tuguegarao City and nearby areas responded to put off the fire,” said Aplasca.
Quoting local investigators, Martirez said the fire started on the ground floor of a building which housed a motorcycle store, stockroom of a local firm. It was not clear yet what started the blaze.
The top floor of the building is where its owners and relatives were living. It is where their bodies were found, as well as those of their grandchildren.
Martirez said most of the cadavers were collected by rescuers on the 5th floor of the building, specifically in the comfort rooms.
He said such a scenario indicated that the victims struggled to get out and stay alive.
Martirez added that it was difficult for the fatalities to get out, considering that the fire started on the ground floor.
All the bodies were taken to the nearby Ortiz Funeral Homes for identification by relatives and forensics expert from the local police, said Martirez.
“All the 14 injured victims were taken to the People’s General Hospital and the Cagayan Valley Medical Center, they are all in stable condition now,” said Aplasca, adding that they were mostly nursing school graduates.
Malacañang ordered local government units to conduct regular safety inspections of buildings, following the hotel fire.
Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte extended sympathies to the families of the fire victims and asked the safety inspectors to undertake measures to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
“We extend our condolences to the families of the victims,” Valte said over state-run Radyo ng Bayan.
“We want to remind local government units, city engineers, and safety inspectors to hold regular inspections of buildings to ensure their compliance to safety standards and prevent this incident from happening again,” she added. (With a report by Genalyn D. Kabiling)

This Tragic event might be prevented and people must've been saved if the building is equip with Fire117
This would not happened if they are prepared and have Fire 117 on their houses, its just PHP 3,650.00 or PHP10/ day, compared to millions of damage.... are you protected? protect your house now and your most valuable assets...

Muntinlupa fire razes 1,000 houses

By JONATHAN M. HICAP
May 15, 2010, 5:29pm
A fire that took more than seven hours before it was put out razed 1,000 houses, leaving 4,000 people homeless and destroying P85 million worth of properties in Cupang, Muntinlupa City, Saturday morning.
Muntinlupa Fire Station probers said the fire started at 4:10 a.m. from the second floor of a house owned by a certain  Purificacion in Carmina Compound on East Service Road, Cupang.
The fire spread quickly to the adjacent Bunyi Compound also in Cupang. Johnny Alcantara, one of the residents of Bunyi Compound, said his house was completely burned down.
He said he was at work when the fire broke out. His wife was not able to save any belongings as she quickly got out of the  house.
About 30 fire trucks, 30 volunteers, and 10 officials from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the scene.
The fire station said the fire reached Task Force India at 6:35 a.m. and was declared under control at 8:20 a.m. by Senior Supt.  Pablito Cordeta, chief of the BFP Metro Manila, who went to the scene with Muntinlupa Mayor Aldrin San Pedro.
The city’s Social Services Department distributed food packs to the victims. The city government set up tents in a vacant lot in Cupang as temporary shelter for the  families.
Firefighters put out the fire at 11:10 a.m. The fire snarled traffic on both lanes of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).
Ivy Vital of the Manila Toll Expressway Systems, Inc. (Mates), the new operators of SLEX, said the influx of fire trucks in the area, as well as the thick smoke, stalled the flow of vehicles along the highway.
“The smoke is very dark and thick,” said Vital, adding that vehicles on both lanes were forced to ground to a halt along Susana Heights.
Local residents also clogged the road along with their personal belongings that they saved from the fire.
Traffic was already moving along SLEX before noon but it was still turtle-paced, reports said.
Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Roderick Aguto, Muntinlupa fire marshal, assured that the city always has enough water supply for  fire fighters, thanks to its “close working relationship” with the local government.
The city government, using 8,000-liter tankers, rations water to both the fire station and local residents on a daily basis, Aguto said. (With reports  from Ellson Quismorio and Willie L. Catapat)

The Stone of Sapphire

Greek word: σάπφειροςsappheiros, "blue stone"

A sapphire means blue in Greek. The blue goes from dark blue almost black to pale blue. The finest blue sapphires are a strong blue. The star sapphire is very valued. Sapphires of colors other than blue are always referred to with the color. There are pink sapphires, yellow sapphires, violet sapphires, green sapphires and clear sapphires. Today most sapphires are mined in Australia.
It is said a necklace of sapphires will cure a sore throat.
The sapphire was called the "Stone of Destiny". Sapphires contribute to mental clarity and perception. They can promote financial rewards.
The sapphire is the symbol of heaven and joyful devotion to God.
Sapphire is associated with Aquarius, Virgo, Libra and Capricorn. It is the birthstone of September and has been the birthstone of April. Sapphire is the symbol of Saturn (dark blue) and Venus (light blue).

The idiom true blue came from this stone too.
According to gemstone.com site, Sapphire was the stone of loyalty

and fidelity, it symbolized truth, sincerity, and faithfulness.
Tradition holds that Moses was given the ten commandments
on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred gemstone
Because sapphire represents divine favor, they were the gemstone of
kings and high priests. The British crown Jewels are full of large blue Sapphire, the symbol of pure  and wise rulers.

Since Sapphire symbolizes sincerety and faithfulness, it is an excellent choice
for an engagement ring.
When Prince Charles Chose a Sapphire engagement ring for Princes Diana
couples all over the world were inspired to revive this venerable tradition.

Sapphire is also the birthstone for September, The month when the most babies are born. Ancient lists also name sapphire as a birthstone for April  and the gemstone for the sign of taurus.
